BEAUTIFULLY written and a rather emotional story,
Hidden Figures is a feel good film that reveals something that many may have
thought was never possible. That black people were ever part of a space mission.
It's a tale about three African-American
mathematician females who assist America in a US race against Russia to put a
man on space - and these women become a critical part of the project.
Based on the unbelievably true life stories of
three of these women, known as "human computers", wehe film follows
these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history's
greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of
astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy
Vaughan played by Octavia Spencer, Mary Jackson played by Janelle Monae and
Katherine Johnson played by Taraji P. Henson crossed all gender, race, and
professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond
anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in
U.S. history as true American heroes.
The film was made at an estimate of $25,000,000 and
was released last month in the US. The ensemble earned the Screen Actors Guild
Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture Sunday night,
beating out the band of actors behind fellow contenders Moonlight, Manchester
by the Sea, Fences and Captain Fantastic.
It
was nominated for two Golden Globes with Octavia Spencer losing the best
supporting actress award to Viola Davis for her performance in Fences, while
Pharrell Williams, Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch lost best original score
to Justin Hurwitz for La La Land. It has also been nominated for three Oscars
for best picture, adapted screenplay and again Octavia Spencer is up for best
supporting actress. The film will be released in local cinemas on February
24.
GABI SAYS: It's a great movie, family friendly and great history lesson. It's more of a girl's night out movie or one that you can watch alone. Really educational and inspiring. Deserves a 7/10 - the length of the film stole the three away.
