THE South African Film and Television Awards nominees are out and it’s clear “the awards are not a popularity contest” as stated by head judge John Kani. Founded by the National Film and Video Foundation, the nominee announcement which happened on Thursday morning in Bryanston saw local film and television personalities clapping and at times sighing at the nominees that were announced, with Kani even expressing that the awards should “reflect the population demographics of the country”. These are said to be judged by a panel of 181 judges who scrutinize the entries, watch all the films and shows in order to reach their final decisions. In the drama category it was Afrikaans production Bloedbroers that airs on KykNet and eTV’s Heist that lead the pack with nine nominations each with SABC3 drama Sober Companion created and lead by comedian Trevor Gumbi who ...
