Accepting the award, the French director said her film was for those “who know history was not made by great men”. Madikizela-Mandela is one of the most misunderstood and Intriguingly  powerful female  figures in contemporary politics.  Her rise and seeming fall from grace bear the hallmarks of epic tragedy. While her husband served a  life  sentence, paradoxically kept safe and morally uncontaminated, Madikizela-Mandela rode the raw violence of apartheid, fighting on the front line and underground. CASTER Semenya is officially the biggest winner this year. The Olympic gold medallist who excelled at the Rio Olympics earlier this year, last night became the biggest winner at the eighth annual Feather Awards – nabbing the role model and sports personality of the year awards. This comes after Semenya scooped an Athlete of the Year award at the Gsport Award in August, which was followed by a personality of the year gong which she scored at the MTV Africa Music Awards last month. Hudson, who won the Academy Award for “Dreamgirls” and was so good in “The Secret Life of Bees,” is now rumored to be in talks for an indie biopic about South African leader Winnie Mandela. Winnie was a winner during her years as wife of Nelson Mandela during his 27-years of illegal incarceration. But in later years she lost her way, getting into legal trouble and becoming a pariah. She and Mandela have been divorced for some time. The word is that either the terrific Derek Luke or actor Idris Elba might be up for the part of Nelson Mandela. Details are still sketchy. OSCAR-nominated British actress Sophie Okonedo has bagged the starring role of struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in a new film. Okonedo, who said in a recent interview that Madikizela-Mandela was a “real strong woman; she’s got balls”, was cast as the lead in the real-life drama produced by the BBC. The BBC said Okonedo, who starred in the acclaimed movie Hotel Rwanda with the Oscar-winning Don Cheadle, was bringing “one of the most extraordinary, if controversial, figures in recent history to the screen for the first time”. The 90-minute film, written and directed by Michael Samuels, and produced by Jolyon Symonds, was shot on location in Soweto. It focuses on the development of the relationship between Madikizela-Mandela and her former husband, Nelson Mandela, from their brief courtship in the 1950s until his release from prison in 1990.
