FINALLY a local actor will play the role of former president Nelson Mandelain a film.
The role which has seen mostly international stars being cast as Mandela due to "marketing purposes of films", will see local actor Sello Motloung being the
second local to star in the lead role in a production An Act of Defiance.
Motloung is said to be using the facilities at the Nelson Mandela
Foundation to prepare for his role as Nelson Mandela.
““There's no better place to visit for in-depth research on the man and
his journey.
“I wanted a source where I would immerse myself completely in the man's
journey. And what better place than the Foundation and it's fulfilling resources,”
said the actor.
The flick is a South Africa-Netherlands co-production that focuses on Bram Fischer, the
lead defense advocate for Mandela and his co-accused during the trial. It ended
after about nine months on 13 June 1964 with eight of them being sentence to
life imprisonment.

The Foundation assisted Motloung by providing access to audio recordings
of the famous ‘Speech from the Dock’ delivered on 20 April 1964 during the
Rivonia Trial. Mandela’s 176-minute speech opened the defence case in the
sabotage trial.
Actors who have played the anti-apartheid
revolutionary character include Danny Glover in 1987's Mandela, Dennis
Haysbert in Goodbye Bafana (2007), and Terrence
Howard in this year's Winnie Mandela, about
Mandela's controversial ex-wife. Locally actor Atandwa Kani
was the first actor to score a cameo role of young Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,
a role which was dominated by Idris Elba while actor Tumisho Masha was second
performer although he held a lead role in Mandela’s
Guns. - additional info from NMF
