New 2 Strangers and a Wedding

Radio station Kaya FM is to launch another season of the bizarre reality show 2 Strangers and A Wedding , even though the last marriage it arranged lasted only three months.

On Monday, the station will start setting up another couple to wed sight unseen.

Station spokesman Helen Gouws said yesterday the show was definitely on the cards.

Driven by breakfast-show host Phat Joe, 2 Strangers and A Wedding pulled in listeners during its last season.

The winners, flight engineer Derrick Matthee and accounting assistant Gail Brookstein, tied the knot at a lavish R1.6-million ceremony in June last year. They went on honeymoon to Mozambique and spoke of their love for each other.

But their romance was short-lived. Days after the wedding, Matthee's former fiancée, policewoman Ashley Michaels, revealed that the groom was "merely in the competition for the money" and that they had been engaged "just days before" he entered the competition.

Brookstein told The Times yesterday that she and her groom had separated in September last year and divorced officially in December.

She said she and Matthee had divided their wedding presents and kept the cars they had won.

"After all the drama, Derrick decided that we should quit this marriage while we were ahead. It was just not working."

Brookstein said she was now "happy and back with her high-school sweetheart".

"I have moved on," she said.

This year's competition will follow the same format as last year's, with a prospective groom being voted for by listeners.

An array of wannabe brides will be arranged for him and he, his family and listeners will choose his bride.

The couple will not be allowed to meet or know each other's real names before the wedding.

Although this year's prizes have yet to be announced, Brookstein and Matthee's prizes included cars, household appliances and free accommodation for a year.

2 Strangers and a Wedding was first launched in Australia in 1998 and has since been produced in the UK and New Zealand.
