TALKS are being held with R&B star and three-times Grammy award winner R Kelly — who’s headed to South Africa for the first time — for an extra performance because his shows are almost sold out.

The 40-year-old, of I Believe I Can Fly fame, will arrive here tomorrow with a 40-member entourage for shows at the Sun City Super Bowl on June 27 and at Cape Town’s Grand West Casino on June 29.

He is one of the world’s top-40 bestselling artists, with over 40million albums sold. He has released 10 albums since 1992.

By Monday, 5000 tickets had been sold for his show at the Super Bowl, which can accommodate 9500 fans. Sun International spokeswoman Funi September said tickets were selling “unbelievably fast”.

Ticket sales opened at 5pm on Friday.

“We had sold about 5000 tickets by Monday and we are now in talks with Kelly’s people to try to get another show with him because tickets for the Sun City show will be sold out in no time,” she said.

Kelly said that he “can’t wait” to sing in Africa.

“I’m very excited about my first visit to Africa. I’ve dreamed about this for a long time and it’s finally here,” he said.

“It will be one of the highlights of not only my career but my life.

“I can’t wait to perform in front of my fans in Africa who have been some of the best in the world.”

He was first scheduled to perform in South Africa in 2001 but when his ex-lover, singer Aaliyah, died in a plane crash that year he cancelled the show, citing his fear of flying.

In 2002, the father of three was indicted on 21 counts of having sex with a 14-year-old girl. The incident was taped and leaked to the Chicago Sun-Times.

In the trial that followed, some witnesses identified the girl but she and her parents denied she was the person shown in the film. And Kelly denied being the man in the video.

The charges were reduced to soliciting a minor for child pornography. Kelly was acquitted in June last year.

Further controversy surrounded him in South Africa last year when his name was used in an alleged scam that netted more than R11-million from hundreds of businessmen.

Busisiwe Zakwe will go on trial next month on fraud charges related to allegations that she duped investors into giving her cash to bring Kelly to South Africa.

Kelly will perform at the awards dinner for Africa Fashion Week, at the Sandton Convention Centre.

After South Africa, his tour moves to Nigeria and London. - The Times
