Movie piracy is really get out of hand
Read:
LOCALLY produced hit movie White Wedding was been pirated within a month of its release.
Illegal copies of the film, released on April 29, have for the past fortnight been on sale on the streets of Johannesburg and Cape Town.
It sells for a mere R50.
Film publicist Joy Sapieka told The Times yesterday the film — which raked in more than R1-million at the box office on its opening weekend — was copied by unknown person who had access to the original copy.
James Lennox, spokesman for the SA Federation Against Copyright Theft, said six people had been arrested in connection with the pirating of White Wedding.
“We seized eight DVD burners and about 1000 copies of DVDs for this film at a Pretoria flat where the burning of the DVD had been happening,” he said.
“This theft of copyright would account for R250000 in DVD sales and that would take away up to 15percent off box office sales from the film.” - The Times SA
