Tyra Banks is coming to SA

MODELLING reality show America’s Next Top Model is coming to South Africa.
Supermodel and owner of the hugely successful US show, Tyra Banks, and South African businessman Tom Kelly, will this month begin scouting the continent for contestants for a spin-off show — Africa’s Next Top Model — that will debut on e.tv in mid-April.
Kelly, chief executive of BSB Entertainment, and Banks will scour South Africa as well as countries such as Nigeria, Mozambique, Swaziland, Botswana, Zambia, Ivory Coast and the Cape Verde Islands in their talent search.
“I am excited to be part of an event of this prestige — seeing the Next Top Model coming to South Africa and being part of it is a wonderful thing,” said Kelly.
The US version of the show premiered in May 2003 and boasted over 2 million viewers who were glued to their TV sets to see 12 finalists battling it out in photo shoots in their quest to be declared America’s Next Top Model.
The African version will be no different — the models will have to qualify by beating hundreds of other hopefuls to get into the contest.
The finalists, women between the ages of 17 and 25, have to be at least 1.7m tall.
They will also have to complete questionnaires and pay a R400 registration fee in order to stand a chance of scooping the top prize — a $100 000 (R1 million) modelling contract with Bank’s modelling agency, a six- month contract as face of designer label Louis Vittone and the opportunity to co-present Bank’s television talk show, The Tyra Banks Show
Aspiring top models will audition at Sandton’s Convention Centre on March 29, where 100 hopefuls will be chosen to launch the competition on April 10 at Montecasino.
“Contestants will battle each other in fashion challenges, photo shoots and commercials . . . and will be judged by a panel that is chosen by Trya Banks herself,” said Kelly.
