Former SA pres named one of the most respectable people by the Brits

Former South African President Nelson Mandela is among the world's most respected people according to UK citizens.

SA Good NewsMandela came a close second to newly elected US President Barack Obama in a poll that asked Britons which world citizens they most respect.

Both Obama and Mandela ranked ahead of well known British figures such as Dame Judi Dench (9), Jamie Oliver (12) and the Queen of England (16).

The survey was conducted by OnePoll, an online market research company that rewards respondents for participating in surveys. OnePoll pays respondents anything from 10p to €1 to participate in a survey and also offers cash prizes of up to €1 000.

More than 4 000 British citizens participated in the “world's most respected people” poll.

A spokesman for OnePoll told the UK Telegraph: "British citizens have the utmost respect for people who have achieved something above the norm. Most of the celebrities listed have earned their right to be called 'celebrities', as they are famous for working incredibly hard at their chosen profession.”

Mandela was recognised for his tireless campaign against apartheid, which saw him spend 27 years in jail to become the first  democratically elected president of South Africa.
