YFM DJ Sbu has run into trouble with the law yet again — this time after allegedly crashing the car of his award-winning actress girlfriend Terry Pheto and then hot-footing it from the accident scene.
The radio bad boy, whose real name is Sibusiso Leope, has gone to ground after allegedly being involved in an accident early on Saturday that left three ADT security guards injured.
Pheto’s publicist, Farah Fortune, confirmed to The Times yesterday that a distressed Pheto phoned her to report that her rented VW Polo had been involved in an accident.
“He [Sbu] had borrowed the car to attend a function on Friday evening. Sbu called her after the accident and told her about what happened,” Fortune said.
Pheto wanted to report the accident to the police immediately and reportedly went to the Sandton police station with Sbu.
ADT spokeswoman Cathy Jackson said one of the guards reported that personal documents, pictures and files containing Leope’s name and details led the police to suspect that he was the driver of the Polo.
Sbu is no stranger to controversy. In 2007 he was caught speeding at 264km/h on the N1 highway in his sponsored Audi TT roadster. He paid a R7,000 fine.
Yesterday, it was clear that Sbu had gone to ground. Calls to his cellphone were not answered and his friends were silent about his whereabouts.
He is expected back at work at YFM after a month’s suspension for violating the station’s rules by playing songs of a protege that were not playlisted by the station.
