Golden Globe winning motion picture Slumdog Millionaire is actually related to SA!

The funny thing was when I got to my desk and read the Sowetan newspaper, only to find out that a man named Vikas Swarup, who is the author of the book "Slumdog Millionaire" -the movie that swept the Golden Globes clean winning four awards this year-was actually based in SA.
And then I thought wow, we got the globes too, after the Tsotsi Oscar...
Turns out the guy is based in Pretoria.
How weird is that? Practically down the road from where I am. hmmmm...
I bet there are many things that we get from the US but never really know because like this story it took days for us to establish the origin of something, that was made here. Well not that he was eknowledged for it at the Globes.
Now the news are all over, the guy who is currently in London must have his phone ringing off the hook because people just want to know how on earth he did.
Well here is the 411: Vikas Swarup, is a career diplomat working for the Indian Foreign Service. Before coming to SA in 2006, as India’s Deputy High Commissioner, he served in Turkey, the United States, Ethiopia, and Britain. It was in the UK that he wrote his debut novel, called "Q&A".
Unlike other first-time authors, Swarup made it look easy: He told a book reading in Johannesburg that he wrote the book in only 2 months, and signed up with an agent in London, who then got him a book deal with a publisher.

Then the rest is history. But congrads to him for the four globes that it scored, even tough he was just the author, the movie would not exist had he not used the power of that pen.
