Durbanite walks away with Miss SA title...

Image
DURBANITE 25-years- old Tatum Keshwar becomes the fieriest of them all at the Miss SA pageant that was announced on Monday night at Sun City. She is beautiful, has the brains, tall as a giraffe and is single... Let me bet all the men will be sending their CVs in now! She said she was called "a geek at school" and now she is the most popular girl in SA. She will get a BMW, a luxurious apartment that she gets to decorate in her own way, go on holidays to a destination of her choice in Africa, get a bursary to study, (not that she needs it because sister- gul holds a psychology degree and am proud to say she went to UKZN for that like yours truly ), she will be clothed by Foschini and wear shoes from Europa Art all year. Now which girl would not want to have all that? The event was very prestigious as it was attended by most Miss SAs of the past. There was Bassie Kumalo (1994), Bernelee Daniell (1995), Kerishnie Naicker (1998), Joan Ramagoshi (2003), Claudia Henk

We will host Miss World again next year...

Image
As most of you, must have read my story in The Times on Monday. Its out there and it will be a tale that we can boast to all other countries that we will host the 59th Miss World again next year. Great news, are just showering this country, as we head to the 2010 World Cup as well. This weekend I must say was a brilliant weekend as I got a chance to meet Wyclef Jean, Maroon5, One Republic and ?uestlove and head to their concerts as well. Then to make my Sunday morning even better, I hear that we are hosting Miss World as well. Rumour has it that people of SA are not so churfed at the fact that this year the international pegeant boasted of UK artists and only had SAns as dancers... I mean we have loads of great singers and performers in this country and in order for us to shine we must boast our artists as well. Bummer.... Well since Joburg Tourism will have 12months to plan as opposed to the last minute planning of 3months, I hope they show off our stars next time and make Miss World

And the winner is Miss Russia, thanks for the "clever" answer Tansey...

Image
Russian blonde Kseniya Sukhinova was crowned the new Miss World, with second runner up was Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Gabrielle Walcott, while the first runner up was Miss India, Parvathy Omankuttan. And yah Miss World Tansey Coetzee made it to the Top5, but her answer to the question: What would you do for your country if you won the title of Miss World? Was by far the "cleverrest" thing I have ever heard in pegeant lifetime. (And yes I am being sarcastic). Her answer being something like this: " With beauty and the brains you can imagine what I would be able to do! " That left me gasping for air the minute I heard about it. Tans, if you have ever watched Miss World be it on TV or movies, before you would know that the answer is always: " I will work with children, charities of the world and promote world peace." But no, she had to be the smart one to say such, I mean an answer like that left me wondering what she meant. Did she mean she would use her beau

SA Bands Rock more that US bands...

Image
I was at the Maroon5/One Republic concert that went down at The Dome in Northgate in Joburg . And I got to say, SA bands Gold Fish and the Parlotones proved to be hotter, better performers and got the crowds screaming, singing along and dancing to their music. Perhaps I am a bit naive or appear as a pessimist about what I am saying, but this was I believe my 1000nth concert if not more, and I know this; SA bands might be used as opening acts but they rock and put on a better show better than US bands. I have seen this also at The Game, 50cent , Puff Johnson concerts and it irritates me that they are not cherished just as much. This time, I have to say One Republic was even better than Maroon 5, meaning if I was to rate them from best to worst, M5 would be the worst out of all the performances I went to see that day. Oh they did sing my favourite songs they do: Sunday Morning, She will be loved and Wont Go home Without You. If it wasn't for the impressive drummer or t

Teargas is not a joke...

Image
MOI decided to head off to Carfax on Friday night to see US drummer/DJ/Producer ? uestlove do his thing on the decks. But to my disappointment some idiot decided they are going to keep releasing something that felt like teargas or what Nike sponsor dude (whom I don't know) called " pepper spray " into the crowds while the place was packed with over 1300 people. It was not the first that that it had happened at the gig cause as I had just arrived with rapper Zubs performing, it happened, leaving Zubz pleading with people not to do such a thing. And when it happened for the 2 nd time, it left me along with others pushing and shoving to the door for some air. The questions and things that keep clogging my head about this whole incident though are: 1. How did that substance get past security after everyone goes through a search at the door? I thought the reason why there is security was to make sure that all dangerous substances don't get through the door, but by

The MetroFM Awards 2008

Image
The Metro FM Music Awards are always FUN. Last year it was PE and this year it was down the traffic filled highway in PTA. There I was driving for 30minutes to get to a gig, which moi never does, even if I was going to be paid to go. I had a map plus the directions in the car, so there I was with my girl Zinhle, I call her Paris and she calls me Nicole.... Chessy I know but we as thick as thieves like Miss Paris and Nicole Richie back in the days of The Simple Life. LOL. Any hooo, it tunred out that the event was actually quite close to the offramp into PTA so I was happy. The pits was when we had to park in the dirty makeshift parking that was arranged at the gig, so much for being early cause we ended up parking so far. There we were doing last minute touch ups, getting into our 2-minute-shoes and ready to bundubash our way to the black carpet (Metros Red Carpet). I call these shoes, 2-minute shoes because they were made to be walked in for exactly that long. I know all sistas own a

Its a FACT: Wyclef Jean Rocks!

Image
I have been to many concerts, in many cities in SA, seen so many international artists come and go, but NEVER have I fallen in love with a musician over night. That is what happened to me when I attended Mr Wyclef' s concert at The Bassline in Newtown. I last loved Wyclef from The Fugees and since then he became just another one of those artists, were in a grat group then whenthey decide to go sole they suck. But clearly I was wrong. Because lastnight he proved to be very such a great performer, as he blew the house down doing remixes from The Fugees tracks, his popular songs like 911 , two wrongs and my now favourite Dollar Bill . Instead of just standing there on the stage and telling us about the US, fancy clothes, cystale champagne, his hommies he spoke to the audience about violence, crime, his love for SA, about his love for women, school and how men should love their women visa versa and many more things. Then he did the unthinkable but lovely thing by walking through the c

?uestlove in South Africa

Image
The legendary Roots drummer, DJ, producer ? uestlove ( Questlove ) is in South Africa for a one night show. Born Ahmir Khalib Thompson in Philadelphia, he brought with him his friend, US producer Yameen . Although the two arrived late for the press conference, it was rather interesting hearing about their love for music and how they have established careers for other US stars such as D'Angelo , Common, Jill Scott , Musiq Soulchild and many more. For ? uestlove it all started off with one jam session, that led to a great deal of Jam Sessions, finding great musicians and giving himself a great name in music. According to him, Musiq Soulchild who was a pizza delivery boy back then, came knocking in the one of his sessions, screaming "Yo man I can sing, I can really sing" leaving ? uest saying, " Aint you the dude from the pizza house?" but giving him a chance to do his thing. And the rest is history. US Producer Yameen on the other hand said he was he

Oprah's Weight Problem is getting out of hand

Image
In January's O Magazine , Oprah Winfrey, 54, details her recent struggles with an out-of-balance thyroid and how the condition made her develop "a fear of working out". She says she has gained 40lb (nearly three stone) since 2006, when she weighed 160lb. "I look at my thinner self and think, 'How did I let this happen again?'" the talk-show queen says in the article issued by Harpo Productions. "I'm embarrassed. I'm mad at myself." No love lost for the queen of talk, but she is totally pushing it with the weight dilemma. I mean one moment she is advising all people includint moi to loose weight with her diet guru Bob Greene and her nutritionist Jorge Cruise, then the next oops! she pops back into weight gain, that is seriously depressing. So in her latest issue of O Mag, she talks about "How did she let it happen again" and how depressed she is about it. “I’m embarrassed. I can’t believe that after all these years, all the th

Wyclef Jean comes to SA

Image
THIS morning yours truly attended a press conference with US top producer and former Fugees singer Wyclef Jean. The man who started off the conference with his songs "Two wrongs" and "911", seemed really keen to be in country and to speak about Women and Child abuse, which he says "Men are cowards for even beating up a woman." Other than his 12 men antourage, Wyclef was a spot as he also gave one MTN employee his jeans that he was wearing in the bathrooms while we all waited, because he told the man that his "True Religion Jeans were outdated in the states." Lucky man scored a pair of jeans worth over R8000. In his visit he will be performing in a private show in Newtown tomorrow night and is set to wow the crowds with his song "Tribute for Lucky Dube". Cant wait to hear the song that has not been released as I hear his lyrics are rather angry at the murderers of Dube.

In Durban with Kwani Experience

Image
On one weekend I decided to explore the life of a 6-piece band called Kwani Experience when went on a road trip to perform in Durban. What a ride I must say as I was driving with three of its members, drummer Monde "Ndeski" Mkhizwana , pianist Mahlatse "Ribatone" Riba and percussionist and vocalist bafan "Spike" Nhlapho, who were all such fun to travel with. The rest of the band were in a second car that had rapper Kwelagobe PO Sekele, bass player Frank Ngongwa and lead vocalist Nkoto Malebye along with their manager Dj Bob . On our leave for the coast at 5am, we made it in time for the hot sun at the beach at noon, just to take a quick dip in the warm ocean and in no time it was time for them to make their way to the venue they were playing called Zulu Jazz Lounge. The hours flew on by and they had to perform, attracting many theatre goers as the venue was right next door to The Playhouse theatre. I had fun I dont know about the guys, Durbanites brought t

Fruit Fusion Party in Cape Town

Image
Last weekend I spent one night in Cape Town as I was invited to a Frusion Party at the Workshop. Many Joburgers were left out of the scens but Ms Kuli Roberts and her Real Gobhoza team were part of the festivities, another there was Shashi Naidoo , who was with her new man. When I say new, I mean she is no longer with RGB producer Paul Viv, what happened? Go figure... The evening was pleasant as Brutal Fruit the event holder showcased a fashion show that hosted beautiful garments by Palesa Mokubung of Matsho . Stunning outfits everywhere and I must thank Red Cube the event organisers for being such great hosts and the Capetonians for being such great party people.
