THE South African Film and Television Awards nominees are out and it’s clear “the awards are not a popularity contest” as stated by head judge John Kani.
Founded by the National Film and Video Foundation, the nominee announcement which happened on Thursday morning in Bryanston saw local film and television personalities clapping and at times sighing at the nominees that were announced, with Kani even expressing that the awards should “reflect the population demographics of the country”.
These are said to be judged by a panel of 181 judges who scrutinize the entries, watch all the films and shows in order to reach their final decisions.

In the drama category it was Afrikaans production Bloedbroers that airs on KykNet and eTV’s Heist that lead the pack with nine nominations each with SABC3 drama Sober Companion created and lead by comedian Trevor Gumbi who own Gumbi Productions scoring three nominations.
It was the comic’s first big production and it scored big nominations for best drama, directing, post production original music score with talent Tiffany Barbuzano and Gumbi being recognised for their talent in best actress and actor categories respectively. Both actors are up for stiff competition as they face heavy weights in actress category Barbuzano will face Sokhulu and Partners’ Linda Sokhulu and Hustle’s Brenda Ngxoli.
Tweeted Gumbi: “Gumbi Productions you fucking chancers! You did this damn thing! Black child you CAN achieve.
“My dumb ass got nominated as best actor in a drama series for #SoberCompanion. I’m so happy,” wrote Gumbi.

In soapie land it was Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya that lead the pack with nine nominations, followed by SABC3’s High Rollers with eight and despite having been canned in March 2016, Mzansi Magic telenovela The Road scored seven nominations.
Popular shows which rake in millions of audiences according to the BRCSA monthly ratings like Uzalo, Generations and Isidingo received two or three nominations each while SABC2 soapie Muvhango and SABC1’s Skeem Saam went unnoticed for the event, even in the most popular soap category that list 17 productions. This was due to them boycotting the awards ceremony.
Chair of the National Film and Video Foundation, the organisation responsible for the SAFTAs Zama Mkosi confirmed the two soapies pulling out of the ceremony.
“They were not part of the award because they pulled out. Those 17 soapies listed in the nominations are those that entered the SAFTAs and they didn’t enter,” she said.

Kani said as a panel of senior judges they would visit the soapies and as them to “tell us why you pulled out”.
“Sometimes there is a perception and a perception perpetuates beliefs, sometimes they think it’s the NFVF that is not funding them or recognise them, some think they don’t get the funding in the private sector that affects them and it has nothing to do with them. We promise to engage those who have pulled out and say sit down tell us why and we will learn from that,” said Kani.

In the feature film category it was crime flick Noem My Skollie and drama movie Shepherds and Butchers that lead the nominations with nine each while drama Sink managed to get eight.
The stirring acting of young actor Garion Dowds in Shepherds and Butchers didn’t go unrecognised as he scored a nomination where he is pitted against senior actors Dis Koue Kos Skat Deon Lotz (who happens to be Dowds’ co-star in the movie) and Noem My Skollie Dan Jacques Mouton.
Again in the category movies like Happiness is a Four Letter Word only scored two nominations for make-up and hair by Diane Allen while Renate Stuurman received a nomination for best supporting actress in a feature film.
A film starring fitness junkie Khabonina Qhubeka, Dora’s Peace scored two nominations including actress Hlubi Mboya’s nomination for supporting role, a category she will face Stuurman and Leleti Khumalo.

In total the provate broadcaster MNet received 114 nominations.

In Talk Show category it was 947’s Anele Mdoda and The Voice judge Karen Zoid who scored top nominations for Real Talk with Anele and Republiek van Zoid Afrika respectively. Both shows feature for best talk show and for their hosting abilities.
Mdoda's older sister Thembisa, who hosts Sunday night favourite show Our Perfect Wedding also got a nod in the best TV presenter category where she will face eight other presenter personalities such as Tumi Morake, Siv Ngesi, Bob Mabena, Katlego Maboe and Lawrence Maleka.

The SAFTAs are set to take place at Sun City from March 16 to 18 with the main event on the 18th set to be broadcast live on SABC2. - Gabi Mbele
