WITHOUT a doubt the cheekiest 8 year old on the block, the
Chevrolet Feather Awards are back once again to celebrate public figures who’ve
shocked, inspired, amused and thrilled the LGBTI community. And this time you can vote for your favourite personality to win a gong.
Founded as a tongue
in cheek ceremony that cast light on issues that faced the LGBTI community in
South Africa, while humorously honouring public figures across a range of
unconventional categories, the Feathers have grown into one of the most highly
anticipated features of the events calendar.
The event has enjoyed partnerships with a range of brands
over the years, most noteably with vehicle company Chevrolet from their
inception, and more recently in 2015, with the Other Foundation, an African
trust that advances equality and freedom in southern Africa with a particular
focus on sexual orientation and gender identity.
“As the organisers, we’re
encouraged and inspired at the caliber of partners that have seen fit to
collaborate with us.” comments Thami
Kotlolo, co-founder and creative director of the Feather Awards.
“In our eight years of existence, the
Feather Awards have grown and evolved immensely, and we’ve always enjoyed
amazing support from audiences, for which we are very grateful. Issues around
the LGBTI community’s status in South Africa remain pressing and urgent – and
the Feathers want to be a part of casting light on them, and being part of
creating a solution for the community.
"We have to express our heartfelt
gratitude to our nominees, past and present, who have always lent their
unwavering support in creating a crazy night of show-biz and pure star power to
help shed light on these issues,” said Kotlolo.
It is the Feather Awards’ aim that through the nominees, the LGBTI
community will continue to gain allies to help in their advocacy and education
around issues of gender inequality and sexual diversity.
With about thirty five high-powered newsmakers as nominees in the
sports, media, music, and entertainment industries across 13 categories, there’s
little doubt that this objective will be furthered by 2016’s Feather Awards
event. The African Feather of the Year Award, introduced last year in
conjunction with the Other Foundation Partnership, will be announced on the
evening of the event.
