A DOCTOR, an engineer and a construction company owner - these are just some of the brains vying for the Miss South Africa crown this year.

Last night 12 finalists out of 25 semi-finalists of the pageant were announced at a soiree hosted at Room Five in Morningside hosted by former Miss South Africa, Liesl Laurie.  Only three provinces were represented from the nine provinces in the country with Gauteng province dominating with eight beauties, while Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal only had two girls representing their provinces.

But this year's pageant didn't go off without a glitch as last week, the pageant saw one girl Lou-Marie Taljaard from Belville in Cape Town, pull out "to focus on her modelling career".
"There were rumours going around with the girls about one girl being pitted to the winning so I felt as though I was wasting time putting off my modeling career only to not be in the running.
"I am not bitter or not invested into the competition, but it makes more sense for me to travel to Germany and build my career than doing the pageant," said Taljaard.

The 12 finalist include 25-year-old medical doctor and second lieutenant in the South African Military Health Services Adè van Heerden from Western Cape, Industrial engineer student Shané Naidoo from Benoni and Masters student and newsreader Boipelo Mabe from Alexandra in Johannesburg. And through the voting process that saw the public vote for their favourite Miss South Africa 2017 semi-finalist which they propelled into the Top 12, it was Pretoria’s Nicole van Niekerk who got the public's love.

The finalist will compete at the finale held in Sun City on March 26 infront of judges including Maps Maponyane, Bridget Madinga and Ezra Davids. The winning beauty will automatically become the spokesperson for the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day initiative while also walking away with R1million in cash and other prizes.

Said Sun International publicity manager Claudia Henkel: “We are absolutely delighted with the finalists. The young women who have been selected depict everything that we hope the pageant represents; intelligence, integrity and beauty.”
