Thabs and Thuba say goodbye on Idols

Thabs Kgoroeadira (20) from Johannesburg and Thuba Myeki (18) from P.E. are the first two Idols voted out by public vote in Idols Season V. Viewers voted for 24 hours since the start of last night’s [Sunday, 22 February] Top 14 Studio Round until five minutes into tonight’s show. And when the votes were tallied tonight, Thabs and Thuba had the fewest votes, and so had to go.

The tension in the studio was palpable when Idols host Liezel called Ntsepa to the stage, but it turned out to be a red herring and Ntsepa was safe. Then Liezel divided the Top 14 into two groups – one group was safe and another was in danger of going home. So when Liezel called Thabs’ name, she already knew that the news would probably be bad.

After saying goodbye to Thabs, Daniel, Thuba, Suzzi and Jason were still in the hot seat. They seemed ready to faint as Liezel methodically reminded them what the judges said about their performances Sunday. But South Africa had voted and Thuba became the second Idol to leave the top 14.

On Sunday [1 March], the remaining Top 12 will perform again in the final Studio Round and next Monday [2 March], the fans will send two more performers home.

Then the Top 10 will move to the Teatro at the Mosaïc in Johannesburg for the first of the Spectaculars, and in these shows they will be allowed to accompany themselves with instruments. Tickets to the Spectaculars are available from Computicket.

For the first time in the history of South African Idols, the voting public has 100% say in determining who the Top 10 finalists - and the winner – will be. Viewers can vote via SMS or on their landlines. Voting costs R2 per SMS and landline calls are charged at normal Telkom rates.

Viewers on DStv compact and Easyview will also be able to catch all the action in the simulcast of these episodes on M-Net’s Magic World Channel and can also cast their votes.
